Vintage style for a modern girl

Flashing back to the 1950s and 60s is such a strong style temptation because there was something so refreshingly innocent and sincere about that era.

I'm sure anyone who was there will tell us, "We were just as naughty as you lot are. Don't be fooled!" But whatever - from this distance, it looks lovely and sweet and I enjoy being inspired by it.

The Love at the Diner range is all about ice-cream sundaes and milkshakes after school. And giggling with your girlfriends over your latest crush.

And before you tell me I'm getting overly nostalgic about it - at least people actually talked to each other in those days instead of burying their noses in a smart phone!

But what if you're not personally about vintage-inspired clothes? How do you style such a nostalgic shoe if you have a more modern look?

Can you Banana Split 2019 style?

There are some incredibly dedicated people who do vintage as part of their regular everyday look. My sister, Linda, is one of them and she has the hair and the winged eyeliner and the perfect lipstick most days of the week.

But for the rest of us mere mortals, who can't wing our way out of a paper bag, what's the plan?

I think it's actually quite simple. You just need to keep three things in mind:

  • The Love at the Diner range is a playful range, so aim to capture that vibe in your outfit and have some fun with it
  • The colour options are striking - bright white and zesty yellow - so you can afford to add some drama
  • Ultimately it's all about comfort with these shoes, so they will play well with soft floaty fabrics and relaxed fits.

Check out my top four style tips below:

Go full citrus

Yellow is a bold colour choice at the best of times so why not go hard and layer yellow on yellow? Surprisingly, teaming yellow with itself has the effect of toning it down and it looks great with this season's citrus florals.

Nautical stripes

For the pure nautical look, team navy stripes with Vanilla Shake. Or go full monochrome with black and white. A dash of yellow adds personality and verve to this classic look.

Colour me floral

Pretty summer florals look stunning with a pop of yellow sunshine or crisp white to keep your look light and fresh.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

You will never look out of place in a little black dress. Even at a BBQ, you'll still be the most fabulous person there - just keep it casual in linen or jersey. How very #melbourne. Looks great with monochrome white or a pop of citrus.

Shop the range

Finally, my style tip for life is, you can do anything you want, so long as it looks deliberate. If people think you did it on purpose, you can get away with it!
